Weeds
Think of grassy weeds as "imposter" plants. They look like regular grass, but they grow faster, look messier, and steal food and water from your lawn.
They accumulate in your yard by finding weak spots. If your soil is too packed down or you mow your grass too short, these weeds sneak into those open spaces. Once they are in, they spread in two ways. Some drop thousands of tiny seeds that hide in the dirt until next year, while others grow creeping underground roots that act like a net, slowly taking over the area and pushing your good grass out.
Get them taken care of when its early, easiest to remove and treat. Most common in the southern Texas region consists of...
Torpedo grass
one of the hardest to kill weeds in the South. It gets its name from its underground roots (rhizomes) which have sharp, white tips that resemble a torpedoe.
Crabgrass
A summer annual that spreads in low, flat mats and thrives in hot, dry, or compacted soil.
Dallis grass
A perennial that grows in large, coarse clumps and can be twice as fast to grow as your regular lawn.
Nutsedge
Technically a sedge, not a grass. It has a triangular stem, waxy leaves, and grows much faster than turf in wet areas.
Grass burr
Famous for its sharp "stickers" or prickly seed heads that attach to skin and pet fur.
Blue grass
A winter weed that pops up in late winter/early spring, often looking like bright green, clumping patches
Dollarweed
Common in very wet or over-watered areas, featuring round, coin-shaped leaves.
Fertilizer
Fertilization acts as a professional nutrition plan for your lawn, providing the essential nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that soil often lacks. In the Southern climate, where heat and humidity can rapidly deplete soil nutrients, regular feeding is vital for building a deep, resilient root system. A well-fertilized lawn grows thick enough to act as a natural defense, by "crowding out" the space, it prevents weed seeds from ever reaching the soil and finding the light they need to germinate. Essentially, fertilizer transforms your grass from a struggling plant into a dense, competitive carpet that can better withstand drought, foot traffic, and pests.
Aeration
Our aeration service is the process of pulling small "plugs" of soil out of the ground to allow your lawn to breathe. Over time, Southern soils, especially those with high clay content become tightly compacted from rain and walking, which suffocates the roots and prevents water from soaking in. By opening up these air channels, aeration breaks up the thatch layer and allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to travel directly to the root zone where they are needed most. This process is particularly important for managing weeds, because most weeds thrive in hard, compacted dirt where grass struggles, aerating tips the scales back in favor of your turf, encouraging the deep root growth necessary to outcompete invasive species.
Irrigation
Here at ALC we also provide aservices, also known as a Sprinkler system. In the scorching Texas heat, irrigation isn't just a "nice-to-have" luxury. It’s a fundamental survival requirement for your turf. Because Southern regions often experience intense heat and erratic rainfall, consistent irrigation provides the deep hydration necessary to prevent your grass from entering a stress-induced dormancy or worse, dying off entirely.
Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to dive further into the soil, which insulates them against fluctuating surface temperatures and allows the lawn to tap into moisture reserves that shallow-rooted, hand watered grass simply can't reach. Without a disciplined irrigation strategy, Texas lawns quickly succumb to soil compaction and dehydration, leaving them vulnerable to pest.
For proper maintenance we recomend, for established lawns, your irrigation system should typically go off twice a week during the growing season. You should not water every day, as this leads to shallow roots and makes your lawn less drought tolerant. The best time for your system to run is in the early morning, 5:00 AM - 7:00 AM. Watering before sunrise allows water to soak into the roots before the sun causes excessive evaporation. Watering late at night can leave grass damp for too long, which creates a breeding ground for fungal diseases.
Our team digs trenches to strategically hit every corner of the lawn that has a blade of grass. That way the client doesn't end up with over watered patches in their lawn, or even any dry spots. Upon scheduling for a consultation, our team will come prepared with different systems to fit the clients needs and budget. Will further discuss plans and input, until a date is set to break ground and get the client and their lawn where they need to be.
Bush and Tree Trimming
Beyond just looking sharp, regular trimming is the secret to a long, healthy life for your landscape. Overgrown branches don’t just block your view. They steal vital nutrients from the rest of the plants and grass. Even if some light filters through a dense canopy, trees absorb the specific blue and red wavelengths that grass needs for photosynthesis. The "leftover" light that reaches the ground is often poor in energy, leading to thin or wispy grass as it stretches to find better light. By thinning out dense canopies and removing deadwood, we improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, which effectively starves out pests and diseases before they can take hold. Our professional pruning service doesn't just cut back your greenery. We strategically shape it to encourage stronger structural growth and vibrant seasonal blooms. Let us handle the precision work to protect your property value and keep your curb appeal looking intentional, manicured, and thriving year-round.
